Sheryll Murray MP was delighted to join Saltash Mayor Martin Gee at an open day for the newly formed Saltash Maritime Cadets. The cadets will offer young people aged 12-18 the opportunity to experience many activities including boating, sports, first aid, water safety and seamanship skills. They also hope to start up a group of junior cadets aged 10-12.
From the 15th November the Maritime Cadets will be meeting regularly on Thursday evening at the Wesley Methodist Church at Callington Road. The Maritime cadets do hope to be soon affiliated to the national Sea Cadets.
Following the visit Sheryll said, ?I was delighted to pop along to the open day at the Saltash Wesley Church on Saturday for the newly formed Maritime Cadets. I would very much encourage the young people to get involved in this fun new activity. There are important waterborne skills to learn which are very important in such a coastal environment like South East Cornwall. Learning to tie proper knots and what symbols at sea mean can save lives. This knowledge is also a useful addition to any CV when competition is fierce in what is a very tough jobs market.
?The Maritime cadets are presently awaiting authorisation from the Sea Cadets and it was really good to see so much interest from the young people in the Saltash area. I really enjoyed using my past skills at splicing a rope and was pleased that whilst a little rusty, I was still able to remember how to use a fid.?
