On Friday local MP Sheryll Murray visited Liskeard Community School to discuss school funding ahead of a debate on the subject in the House of Commons. Sheryll met with head teacher Mrs Donna Bryant and discussed issues before joining pupils for lunch in the cafeteria.
During the discussions Sheryll was told about sixth form education and the importance of specialists in areas such as Child & Adolescent Mental Health Studies (CAMS) and Education Welfare Officers (EWOs).
Sheryll said, “I wanted to find out exactly what is happening with educational funding and the best way to do that is to go back to school. It is important that representatives like me are briefed by those on the front line so we can raise concerns that are on the ground with policy makers. I am always keen to be briefed by local people so that I can hear first hand how the policy changes in Westminster can affect residents in South East Cornwall.”
After her meeting Sheryll was pleased to join Donna and pupils Anthony, Tom, Adam, Jess and Samantha to discuss education with the end users and to hear the issues young people are coming across.
Sheryll commented, “It is always inspiring to meet with the young people of my constituency who give me great confidence in our country’s future. Too often we hear from a few bad apples in the news giving young people a bad reputation when this is far from the truth. I was pleased to discuss with the children of Liskeard School how they felt about their education and about the subjects they were studying. I was interested how they also raised issues such as the change in bin services which many constituents have also contacted me about.”
Sheryll also commented on the importance of having pupils register for free school meals to help school funding. This is something she has raised in more detail in a previous press release here:
