Local MP Sheryll Murray MP recently toured local firm Cornish Orchards with owner Andy Atkinson who moved to the 110 acre farm owned by the Duchy in 1992.
The traditional business is a great success story which already employs 22 local people. Andy described the business as “entering an exciting period of growth”. He attributed some of the success to developing strong relationships with customers and focusing on the level of service provided.
Andy went on to explain how he uses local produce and focuses on the quality of the product. He also explained to Sheryll, who sits on the Environmental Audit Committee in Parliament, about the work he was doing to protect the environment. He took Sheryll to see the new wetlands project being led by top expert Clara Abrahams who also advised on wetlands being planted for the Olympic Games in London. The project is one way to use waste water which can help the environment.
The new production facilities will not only increase efficiency in production but will also provide additional flexibility to meet customer demands. The project is part of a £2 million investment over 2 years. The business this year, for the first time, has produced 1,000,000 pints.
Following the visit Sheryll said, “It was fantastic to visit such a successful Cornish firm. The quality of the produce is excellent and I am very proud to say that Cornish Orchards is in my constituency. I wish them the very best with their new investment in this very rural area and am sure they will achieve every success.”
