Sheryll Murray MP has joined both her Cornish colleagues and many other members to celebrate all that is Cornish.
Firstly the Department of Communities and Local Government raised a flag for St Piran’s. Sheryll joined the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Rt Hon Eric Pickles, and some of her Cornish colleagues to fly the flag. Mr Pickles said, “I would like to wish all the residents of Cornwall a very happy St Piran’s day”.
Secondly she visited a reception with many colleagues in the Houses of Parliament to enjoy pasties and Cornish beer.
Thirdly she raised the fact that it was St Piran’s Day in the House of Commons by asking The Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport (Mr Jeremy Hunt), “Is my right hon. Friend as pleased as I am that the great symbol of Cornish culture, the Cornish pasty, has been awarded protected geographical indication status? Will he join me and my Cornish colleagues in wishing my constituents in South East Cornwall, and indeed all the people of Cornwall, a happy St Piran's day for Saturday?”
Mr Hunt replied, “I have great pleasure in wishing my hon. Friend and her constituents a happy St Piran's day. I was in South East Cornwall on holiday the weekend before last, and the highlight of that weekend was an absolutely delicious Cornish pasty.”
Sheryll commented, “St Piran’s day is an excellent opportunity to show just how wonderful Cornwall is. I’m lucky. I live here. Our celebrations up in London do give us the fantastic opportunity to promote Cornwall and its produce to the wider population.”
