Member of Parliament Sheryll Murray was pleased to meet Councillors from the Antony Primary School Council on Friday.
One of the main issues that came up was the damage caused by the recent storms. Some letters from affected children were read out and one member of the Council even told Sheryll how the family had lost their boat which was moored in a harbour. Suggestions right down to the type of flood defences were also given by the children.
Sheryll said, “I would like to thank the children who had clearly been affected by the storms and what really impressed me was the amount of thought and research they had done and that they had come up with ideas that could help people.”
The children also asked Sheryll many questions about the work she undertakes including why she became an MP, the qualifications you need and what topics she has been bringing up in Parliament.
Sheryll said afterwards, “School Councils are a good way to introduce young people to democracy - how people get together, discuss ideas and implement them – just like we do in Parliament but just on a smaller scale. I hope these children, through this experience, grow up to play a part in our democratic system.”
