Local MP Sheryll Murray was pleased to welcome Saltash School St Stephens Primary today to Parliament. Sheryll met with the class following their tour of the Houses of Parliament.
Following an explanation of how a law travels through parliament by the Education Department in Parliament, Sheryll told the children her real life experience of passing Bills through Parliament and how they are now Acts of Parliament.
Sheryll is the first back bench MP to successfully get two Private Members Bill through Parliament in her first term in the last 20 years. Sheryll’s first Bill is now the Marine Navigation Act 2013 and received Royal Assent on 25 April 2013. Sheryll’s second Bill is now the Deep Sea Mining Act 2014 and received Royal Assent on 15 May 2014.
Following their visit Sheryll said, “It is always nice to meet children in Parliament from South East Cornwall. I am always impressed by their interest in the democratic system and St Stephens Primary certainly seemed very keen to learn.
“I would recommend to all schools and other constituents who can to visit Parliament. It is a very interesting and historic building which really does put our democracy in perspective. Westminster Hall, the largest area within the Palace, is also the oldest and dates back to 1099. In and around the Hall, grew up the major institutions of the British state: Parliament, the law courts and various government offices giving it a fascinating place in our history.
