Sheryll Murray MP joined local people in the small village of Crafthole, part of her South East Cornwall constituency, to celebrate the opening of one of the country’s smallest Tourist Information Centre’s. Mrs Murray addressed those present before the converted red telephone box was officially opened by Margaret Bass who had originally come up with the idea.
The old telephone box was purchased by the local Maker with Rame Parish Council for £1 following its decommissioning by BT. Over 100 telephone boxes have been removed from the network in Cornwall, despite safety concerns, due to a lack of use.
Following the opening Sheryll said, “I would like to thank the Parish Chairman Cllr Dr Chris Kennedy for the invitation to see for myself this innovative use for what is a very iconic piece of British street furniture. I am glad that the old phone box has not been lost to the village and hope this will help local businesses get business from visitors. This is a very useful 24 hour source of information for people coming into the area. I hope the project is very successful.”
