Sheryll Murray MP, who sits on Parliament's green watchdog the Environmental Audit Committee, took more direct action to help the environment over the weekend. Sheryll joined a group of volunteers to take part in a beach clean at Churchtown Farm Community Nature Reserve in Saltash.
The Friends group helps maintain the reserve which has a wide variety of different wildlife habitats, mostly hay meadows with arable fields, woodland, wetland, scrub, rocky shoreline, mudflats and an extensive network of hedgerows. The reserve has extensive views over the River Lyhner, the River Tamar and beyond to Devonport and Plymouth Sound. It’s location on the edge of Saltash makes it an ideal place for people to escape for a bit of peace and quiet.
Sheryll said after the event, “It was great to join the team and help keep our beaches clear of rubbish. This not only protects our scenery but also the wildlife which inhabits it.”
Sheryll was keen to raise one issue which many of the volunteers raised, “Whilst people picking up their dog faeces is welcomed, it is disappointing to find the bags tied to trees and left. I commend any dog owner who shows responsibility and cleans up after their dog when out walking, but please remember to put it in a bin provided or take it home. Ordinary plastic bags do not decompose and leaving them tied to hedges and trees is a hazard to the environment and public health.”
