Today Prime Minister David Cameron visited Kingsand in Cornwall to see for himself the damage that was done on the Cleave and to the Kingsand Institute.
Local MP Sheryll Murray showed the Prime Minister around her home area where she used to represent as a County Councillor since 2001. They both met with residents who had suffered from the extreme storms recently.
Afterwards Sheryll said, “It was great to have the Prime Minister visit the village where he heard for himself the problems the residents had faced. He was able to offer reassurance that the Government was doing all it could to help the local area.”
The changes to the Bellwin formula which Sheryll had been raising since elected would now benefit Cornwall. In a Statement Sheryll said, “It is good to have a Prime Minister that will listen. He listened to me in Parliament when I raised the problems with the Bellwin formula and has come to Cornwall himself to listen to constituents.
“I was pleased that he took time to talk to people at their own homes so he could hear the dreadful experiences first hand. I was also pleased that he met with local leaders from the Environment Agency, the Kingsand Institute, local business and the local Councillor. The Prime Minister said he would involve English Heritage to assist with repairs to the Kingsand Institute, asked the Environment Agency to look at what can be done to improve defences for properties and asked the local Councillor to look at setting up an emergency fund to help residents.”
