New steps, financed by local shops and local community funds, were officially opened by Sheryll Murray MP on Saturday in Looe. The steps, installed by the East Looe Town Trust link the main beach with the second beach which is particularly popular with rock poolers after the old steps were condemned as being in danger of ‘catastrophic collapse’
John Warne, Chairman of the East Looe Town Trust, explained, “public concern was being expressed about the denial of long established access to the ‘second beach’, a very popular location for youngsters rock-pooling and a regular walk for adults, especially dog walkers – given that dogs are not allowed on the main beach. In this light the Trust itself decided to install new steps for reasons of public enjoyment and safety”.
Sheryll cut the ribbon and said afterwards, “I would like to thank John Warne and all on the East Looe Town Trust for keeping this important access available for beach users when Cornwall Council refused to fund it. I would also like to thank all those who contributed to the steps both financially and through the giving of their time. In particular I would like to thank the Co-operative Community Membership Fund, the Town Council, the local Cornwall Councillors, West Looe Town Trust and Looe Old Cornwall Society for their financial support. I would also like to give special thanks to Colin Crabb for bringing it all together and to the Trust’s Maintenance Manager Anthony Scarah and his assistant Ben Taper.”
