Sheryll Murray MP has welcomed the Government announcement that £1.5 million is to be spent on a much needed footbridge and other improvements at the Carkeel roundabout. The footbridge is planned on the Plymouth side of the roundabout to allow people to cross from Saltash to the Tamar View industrial estate which includes many businesses including Waitrose. There will also be road improvements to increase capacity which is designed to improve traffic flow in the busy summer months.
In a statement Sheryll Murray said, "I have long campaigned for this important footbridge for Saltash. Last year I brought the then Minister, Theresa Villiers MP, to the site to see for herself how people where literally taking their life in their hands to try to cross this incredibly busy main road. To many the road has just been too dangerous forcing people into their cars to travel what could be a very short journey which could be easily walked but for this barrier.
"This is an improvement which has been desperately needed and I have been in discussion with the Highways Agency about this bridge since I was elected. I am really pleased that this bridge has now been secured."
All improvements are due for completion by March 2015. The overview will now go for detailed consultation.
