Sheryll Murray MP was pleased to officially open the new equipment at the Rame Head National Coastwatch Institute which included new radar equipment on Friday.
The National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) is an entirely voluntary organisation keeping a visual watch along UK shores. Each station assists in the protection and preservation of life at sea and around the UK coastline. In 1994 when two fishermen lost their lives off the Cornish coast below a recently closed Coastguard lookout, local people decided to open and restore the visual watch. When the first station was opened at Bass Point on the Lizard, NCI was born. Today 49 stations keep a visual watch around the coastline of England and Wales.
In a statement Sheryll said, “I was also delighted to visit the National Coastwatch Institute at Rame Head to open their newly refurbished and newly equipped look out post. The NCI has a special place in my heart. Both Neil and I were members of the Plymouth Sea Safety Group which preceded the NCI and I can remember the work of so many hard working volunteers to gradually build the network of NCI Lookout Posts that now provide such a fantastic contribution to sea safety around the coast. The NCI rely on donations and also welcome visitors and I would urge anyone to visit the Rame Head NCI or the Polruan NCI in South East Cornwall.”
