Sheryll Murray MP today met with the new Chief Executive of the Marine Management Organisation, John Tuckett, today to discuss solutions to finding an alternative site to Whitsand Bay for the disposal of material from dredging the Tamar.
In a letter to Sheryll, Mr Tuckett referred to the recent Press Statement issued regarding the Judicial Review proceedings that were brought against the MMO concerning the Marine License application at Rame Head South dispersal site.
In a statement Sheryll said, “I am pleased that the MMO have chosen to consult with the elected Member of Parliament and am delighted that an alternative site is now being encouraged. I have been calling for an alternative site for the disposal of the dredged spoil since 2007 and working to raise the profile of this issue since 2004.
“After meeting with the Minister George Eustice in January 2014, I have been trying to secure a meeting with the MOD, MMO and Dredging Company to discuss alternative sites for the dispersal. Sadly, the Judicial Review prevented such a meeting. I am pleased that the MMO has now met with me in such a positive manner.
“Mindful of the importance of Devonport Dockyard, ABP Millbay and the Cattwater Harbour, I believe that the dredging must continue. It is important to remember that a license is for dredging and this license includes conditions for the nature and location of the material that can be disposed of at sea. Many recent licenses recognise that waste from certain areas subject to dredging are not suitable for disposal at sea.
Sheryll acknowledges that whilst the Stop Dumping Campaign has chosen to seek the Judicial Review route, it would have been irresponsible for any Member of Parliament to sign such an application.
Sheryll explained, “When the Government defends a legal case it results in spending taxpayers money and, particularly in these economic times, puts pressure on the budget which could be spent in other areas – including investigations into the use of other sites. Having worked on this issue for over a decade I will continue to work with all Government Authorities and am determined to ensure that a long term solution is found without impacting on local jobs in South East Cornwall.”
In a statement Mr Tuckett said, “The MMO is also undertaking a strategic review of disposal sites around the coast of England to provide additional information to assist future decision making on marine licensing applications. This review will look at the current status of each site, sensitivities and forthcoming designations, and the process for identifying and using disposal sites. We are encouraging those involved in dredging activities to look at other disposal sites.”
