On Monday Sheryll Murray, MP for South East Cornwall, spent a morning with a group of people who suffered from Aphasia having suffered a stroke. The group is part of the community disability network charity “Connect”.
They spoke of the importance of the group saying how they “look forward to Monday” for the group saying that “nothing compares to talking to other people who have had a stroke” and describing the camaraderie that they feel.
The conversation is an important part of the healing process after the stroke as many feel it difficult and frustrating communicating and spoke of difficulty dealing with accents. They talked about what they had done over the previous week which included a new car, family visits, a trip to Mount Edgcumbe and even a prize at Boconnoc Flower Show. They also explained that they keep an eye out for each other, go out for meals and also speak to patients and family of those who have just suffered a stroke.
Following the visit Sheryll said, “What a fantastic group of people and how important this group is to those who suffer a stroke and to their families. I have written to the Secretary of State, Cornwall Council and the local NHS to stress the importance of this group and its future.”
