Sheryll Murray MP opened an event entitled ‘Making Waves’ to assist retired Sea men organised in the Plymouth Age Concern building in Elspeth Sitters House near the Barbican. The event was designed to bring all the organisations which help sea men so they can work together and with the customers themselves.
A number of organisations were present at the event including the Fishermen’s Mission. The Fishermen’s Mission is the only fishermen’s charity that provides emergency support alongside practical, financial, spiritual and emotional care. They help all fishermen, active or retired, and their families. The SAIL Seafarer’s Advice Information Line provides a specialist telephone advice service for merchant seafarers, fishermen and their families and dependants. Seafarer’s Link was also on hand which lets sea men contact each other to break any feeling of isolation. Tax help was available alongside information from the Merchant Navy Association. Guests were entertained by singer Wendy Bassett and an informative display about the Titanic from Tony McGuire.
Following the event Sheryll said, “This event was a fantastic way for retired Merchant Sea Men, retired Royal Navy personnel and fishermen to join together in a relaxed environment to share their memories and generally enjoy the company of people who shared one thing in common. Working in one of the most unpredictable, often dangerous but also the most beautiful environments in the world – the sea.”
