Local MP Sheryll Murray, who is the Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to Libraries Minister Ed Vaizey, went to Looe Library today to hold one of her regular Advice surgeries. As well as holding her surgery Sheryll joined staff and volunteers to celebrate National Libraries Day.
People made over 280 million visits to libraries in 2013-14, making a trip to the library one of the most popular activities in the UK, where over half the population has a library card and nearly 10 million are active borrowers.
In a statement following her visit Sheryll said, “I was really pleased to celebrate National Libraries Day with staff and volunteers at Looe Library. Libraries like Looe are a vital public service and are great fun too.
“I am always amazed by the fantastic range of services they have at the library. As well as an excellent range of books they also have DVDs, printing facilities, a scanner, a photocopier and computers with internet access.
“As well as my advice surgeries they also have computer classes, a knitting club, reading groups and even a Baby Bounce and Rhyme for the very young.”
Local Librarian Gilliane Sanders added, “People come to us to borrow books, of course, and there’s nothing we like more than recommending new titles to readers young and old. But there is so much more we do that lots of people don’t know about, and National Libraries Day gives us a chance to shout about those other services too!”
