On Monday Sheryll Murray, MP for South East Cornwall, was pleased to visit the Merlin centre just outside St Austell. The centre helps support those with Multiple Sclerosis by providing a range of therapies to those affected by this incurable condition.
Following her visit Sheryll said, “Having worked in the NHS locally for over twenty years I know how massive an impact MS can have in people’s lives. The Merlin Centre has a fantastic range of services in such a beautiful setting. I would encourage any sufferer from Cornwall to contact the centre to see what services they could provide to ease their suffering. The Merlin Centre is a very worthwhile charity and I would encourage people to give what they can.”
The Merlin Centre says about itself, “The Merlin Project, Cornwall MS Therapy Centre was founded in 2001, by Derek Murphy, a retired Medical Doctor, and his wife Eileen. Derek, who was awarded an MBE in 2011 was a former head of the Neurosciences Section of the Administrative Headquarters of the British Medical Research Council in London. Their dream of opening a centre for people living with Multiple Sclerosis was realised in 2009 when Cornwall MS Therapy Centre, home of the Merlin Project opened its doors for the first time. The Merlin Project is the fundraising side to the centre which offers subsidised therapy for people living with MS, their families and their carers. Although a centre specifically built for those with MS the centre offers a range of Orthodox and Complementary therapy suitable for a range of neurological conditions. The centre costs £250,000 a year to run and receives no financial support from the government. It therefore relies entirely on fundraising, grant applications and community support. Cornwall has one of the highest incidences of MS in the country. The Merlin MS Centre aims to support those living with this incurable condition by offering a range of subsidised clinical and complementary therapies to those whose lives are affected. The charity is not supported by the government so therefore relies on fundraising, donations, room hire, grants and gifts in memory to continue its work.”
