Speaking as the Localism Act receives Royal Assent, Sheryll Murray MP said, “This Bill is a real step forward for our local councils. It is right that decision making is given to our local Councillors who we elect to represent us on both Cornwall Council and our local Town and Parish Councils.
“Over the years under Labour, the role of the local Councillor was undermined because their decision had to comply with central rules made in London.
“A one size fits all view of these important local decisions does not work and I am really pleased that we will not return powers to make decisions about local issues to the experts, local people.
“This means that local Councillors at all levels will now have a real recognition for the hard work they do, especially Parish and Town Councillors who give their time freely to serve their local community. Of course with power comes responsibility and I am happy to work with all of my Councillors at every level throughout South East Cornwall when necessary to assist them with the challenges that lie ahead as they get to grips with their new role.”
