Local MP Sheryll Murray was pleased cut the ribbon for the cyclists on the newly laid out Caradon Trail on Saturday morning. The cyclists were undertaking a sponsored cycle ride along the trail in aid of the Chestnut Unit at Derriford Hospital.
The Caradon Trail is a route covering The Caradon Hill Area Heritage Project (CHAHP) which is a Heritage Lottery Fund Living Landscape Partnership Project helping to recognise, conserve and enhance the area’s special character. Through events, groups, information sharing and projects, CHAHP involves local residents in all aspects of the heritage and landscape, aiming to celebrate local distinctiveness, protect wildlife and livestock grazing, conserve mining and prehistoric sites, and encourage local skills training.
The cycle ride was to raise money for the Chestnut Appeal which describes itself as, “Men’s Health suffers from an imbalance and it’s our mission to highlight this most common cancer in men. We want to get more men talking about their health and taking action when they feel like something could be wrong. As you may know we have already funded six prostate cancer nurses across Devon & Cornwall as well as some of the very latest treatments available and are delighted to continue working in such a way with our local Hospitals and look forward to many more years of positive partnership.”
Following the opening Sheryll said, “This area has fantastic heritage and this trail is a fantastic way to explore this. I would like to thank everyone who put this project together and particularly all the cyclists for raising money for such a great cause. As a former local doctors receptionist I know what a devastating disease this is. As a local person going back generations I always find the local history interesting and am looking forward to exploring the trail myself – should I get the time!”
