Local MP Sheryll Murray made two visits on Monday to local firms to discuss the Apprenticeship scheme. The scheme can help businesses across all sectors by offering a route to harness fresh new talent.
Sheryll’s first visit was to bespoke joiner Keith Brenchley in Liskeard who deals with bespoke joinery and shop fitting. He is a specialist in box sash windows, doors and staircases.
Sheryll explained, “Keith’s business is an example of the many successful businesses we have in South East Cornwall. I hope that we can ensure the specialist skills he has are passed onto youngsters so that we can keep these important skills in the area. I was so pleased he expressed an interest in taking on an apprentice and will make sure he has the contacts to be able to do this.”
Sheryll’s second visit was to Lantoom quarry just outside Dobwalls. The firm has had a particularly good experience with Apprenticeships. Richard Crocker, a Director at Lantoom Quarry, explained, “Mrs Murray wrote to me previously on 18th June 2012 encouraging me to take on a new apprentice. Since then I have taken on 3 apprentices of which 2 are still with us. We now have 3 out of our 8 staff who are in or were on apprenticeships. We've been making good use of various business support mechanisms provided by the government and despite very difficult conditions our business continues to grow steadily.”
Sheryll said, “Lantoom Quarry really is a success story of how Apprenticeships can work and I am really pleased that this growing local company is being able to use the scheme. I would encourage other companies to use this scheme.
“Both these firms are keen to get enquiries from the general public and can be contacted through their websites.”
