Local MP Sheryll Murray was pleased to meet with Looe’s Monkey Sanctuary ‘Wild Futures’ near Looe to discuss an enquiry into the Primate pet trade due to be held next month as part of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (EFRA) Committee.
Sheryll who sits on the EFRA Committee in Parliament pushed for the enquiry having campaigned since she was elected to stop the Primate pet trade. Sheryll has adopted ‘Donkey’ at the sanctuary who had suffered as a circus animal.
Sheryll explained, “Primates are social beings who need company of their own kind and to keep one as a pet is cruel. Often this cause behavioural problems and often aggressive behaviour towards the owner. I have spoken out against this cruel trade before and am keen to see a complete ban on keeping our closest animal relatives as pets.
“Wild Futures do a fantastic job looking after the animals who have suffered because of this cruelty and are the experts that MPs need to listen to. The tales are often harrowing but they also have the expertise including on how bans have worked successfully in other countries.
“I am pleased to report that the Committee has invited Wild Futures to come to Parliament to give their evidence verbally to allow the MPs to question their expertise.”
