At a meeting of around 100 local residents in Looe Holiday Park a representative from Barratt Homes apologised for the threat of the main Looe to Plymouth road being closed and stated that the company was “committed not to have long term road closures”.
The concession came after a 1,000 strong petition was organised by a group of local campaigners. The representative from Barratt Homes said how “very sorry” he was having not realised the essential nature of this main route into Looe. He stated that all parties now had a “common aim” to find an alternative and that subject to negotiations there will be a new plan “early in the new year”. He did however say that some work would still have to be carried out on the road but that it would now be done over three weeks and by using traffic lights. He stated that there was the possibility that the road may have to close on the odd occasion but that this would be done overnight to minimise disruption.
Local MP Sheryll Murray, who attended the meeting, said she was very pleased that the road would not have to now close for three months but stressed she would go straight to the Minister if problems arose. In a statement she said, “I recognise the need for affordable homes for the people of Looe but we must always look very carefully at any disturbance for residents. The decision to close this road for three months was clearly a bad one and I am pleased that a compromise seems to have been reached. I would like to thank Cllr Armand Toms for the hard work he has put into resolving this issue, Barratt Homes for willing to compromise, Barclay House and all the people of Looe who campaigned to ensure that this three month closure did not occur.”
