Sheryll Murray, MP for South East Cornwall, and Connor Flew, Member of Youth Parliament for East Cornwall, attended the British Egg Industry Council function on the Houses of Commons Terrace on the 4th of July 2011 on behalf of the many egg producers in the constituency as they know the importance of this sector in the local economy.
Leading egg farmers, industry representatives, Members of Parliament and Peers got together to discuss the achievements that the British egg industry has made over the past years, one of them being compulsory vaccination against salmonella, ensuring that consumers are safe from the disease.
Before the welcome speech from the Earl of Shrewsbury, pancakes and omelettes were served to attendees, highlighting some of the many uses of eggs.
The British Egg Industry Council represents a significant sector of UK agriculture. The number of laying hens has increased to 32 million, of which 45% are free range.
Total market value totalled an approximate £868 million in 2010, highlighting the strength of an industry that is a major contributor to the British economy.
Eggs are the perfect food for those on the go as they are high in protein and act as a major source of energy. Moreover, eggs are still very affordable with a dozen free range eggs only cost on average 84p.
