Local MP Sheryll Murray joined by Saltash Mayor Bill Phillips, Lord Mayor of Plymouth John Mahony and around 500 local people to cross the Royal Albert Bridge early on Sunday Morning to celebrate the completion of a 6 year major refurbishment costing £20M.
Saltash’s best known landmark was the work of Isambard Kingdom Brunel and was completed in 1859. It was opened by Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria, who the bridge was named after.
Sheryll walked the almost half mile bridge under the direction of Network Rail. Whilst she walked across the bridge she met an actor playing Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
Following her walk Sheryll said, “I would really like to thank all the organisers for what was a very enjoyable and interesting walk. Being a rail only bridge it is not often that you get this opportunity and I would like to thank the team from Network Rail for helping make the walk both enjoyable and safe.
“I was very impressed by the way that so much history was available from the excellent exhibition to meeting Isambard Kingdom Brunel himself really bringing the whole experience to life.”
