Local MP Sheryll Murray attended a ceremony aboard the French warship Dixmude where Mr Jago, a constituent of hers, received a French Legion D'Honneur for his part in liberating the country in World War 2.
At 24 Mr Jago was part of the 3rd Division who were one of the first to land on the Sword beach on the Normandy coast of France in June 1944. Mr Jago was injured from shrapnel after a shell landed near him. He was hospitalised for several months and is still suffering from his injuries although this did not stop him starting a building firm.
Sheryll said after the event, “It was fantastic to see Mr Jago receive the French Legion D'Honneur for his part in liberating France during WW2 this morning. He was one of a small number of veterans to receive the medal aboard the French Navel Ship Dixmude. It was an honour to join him and his family on such a proud occassion.
“I was also pleased to be given a tour of the ship by the XO. Dixmude is an amphibious assault ship and can best be described as a mixture of HMS Bullwark and HMS Ocean. I was very impressed by the flexibility that has gone into her fixtures to enable the ship to engage in both military operations and work with Non-Governmental Organisations and Charities when she is participating in Humanitarian operations. She is certainly a great asset to NATO operations and also takes part in exchanges of personnel with other NATO nations.”
