Sheryll Murray MP has welcomed the Government’s announcement in the budget that they have managed to double the amount of additional funding it was allocating to local highways which will mean an extra £4,728,416 for road repair in Cornwall following the severe winter.
The Secretary of State for Transport, Philip Hammond MP, explained, “The £200 million of additional funding to Local Authorities is possible because of the savings my Department is making on its budget for 2010/11, following tough decisions already taken, including efficiencies made this year.”
To promote greater transparency and accountability to local communities, all local highways authorities have agreed to publish information by the end of September showing how this additional money has been spent.
Commenting after the announcement Sheryll said, “I welcome this substantial shift by the Government to a more transport friendly one. Yesterday at the budget we saw help for the hard pressed motorist. Today we have seen money made available to assist all road users.
“These moves are a great help especially in such a rural area like South East Cornwall."
