Local MP Sheryll Murray has presented a signed original House of Commons Act of Parliament to Liskeard Museum for use in their focus on the mining history in the surrounding area. Mrs Murray steered the Deep Sea Mining Act through the House of Commons as a Private Members Bill in the hope it will bring jobs to the country.
For many years there was little interest in deep sea mining, but before the Bill for this Act was introduced a number of commercial companies had already made applications to the Authority to explore for polymetallic nodules. The legislation was put in place to ensure Britain was at the forefront of this exploration. David Cameron claimed this could be worth £40bn to the UK economy over the next 30 years.
Following her visit to the library Sheryll said, “I visited the Liskeard Museum to take them a copy of my Deep Sea Mining Act which received Royal Assent at the prorogation of Parliament in July. Liskeard Museum is a fantastic asset for the Town and much of this is thanks to the work of volunteers and Anna the very talented curator. I was very impressed with the latest display about Cornish Mining and Minerals which has been put together thanks to a variety of financial contributions. The interactive display where you are able to look at various minerals through a microscope and then draw the image on an interactive screen were very good. Other displays include some really good work by our local school children and it is well worth popping in to the Museum which I believe is a real asset to Liskeard.”
