Sheryll Murray, MP for South East Cornwall, has met with fundraising son and father team, Jonny and Andy Burnard, who carry out walks for charity, in Parliament this week. Their next sponsored walk, Walk With Pride, which involves walking from Saltash to Land’s End takes place next month.
Jonny, 15, attends Callington Community College and has recently received the prestigious Diana Award in London for his dedication to charity work. He has been committed to raising money for charities supporting disadvantaged children around the world from a young age, carrying out several charity walks over the last four years. Jonny has walked from Mount Edgcumbe to Polruan, raising £800 for a school in India. He has also walked from his school in Callington to Guipavas, France, one of Callington’s twinned towns, with his father. The latter raised a further £2,500 for the same cause, allowing many children in India access to an education.
Jonny’s next charity walk, Walk With Pride, will take place in relay with his father and grandfather, from the 17th to the 24th of August, over 110 miles from Saltash to Land’s End. This is to raise money for the South West Children’s Hospice, Little Harbour, which helps local children who are suffering life limiting illnesses. The valuable work of the Children’s Hospice was highlighted to Jonny in a recent visit, which he described as a ‘humbling’ experience that further inspired him for the walk. Walk With Pride is also being supported by St Mellion International, which has kindly allowed students to support the project within their gym and swimming pool facilities to raise even more money. Jonny, Andy, and Jonny’s grandfather will be set off by South East Cornwall MP Sheryll Murray at the Celtic Cross by the Tamar Bridge in Saltash at 9am on Sunday 17th of August.
In a statement Sheryll said, “This really is an inspiring young man and he is doing so much for very good causes. It was fantastic to meet him in Parliament and I am pleased he was able to tour this fantastic building whilst he was in London. I am pleased he has been given the Diana award – I cannot think of someone more deserving.”
