Sheryll Murray MP welcomed the news that a new Multi Purpose Healthcare Facility for Torpoint has moved a step closer today. Sheryll told the meeting of the board of the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Primary Care Trust which was held in Torpoint on Wednesday how she had worked in the Surgery for over 20 years and had first hand experience of the need for the new building.
She went on to say that whilst the new building would be located just over a mile from the present Antony Road Surgery, this could be overcome and there were already examples of new surgeries being located on the edge of Towns. One such example is the Oak Tree Surgery in Liskeard where the benefits of a superb new building far outweighed the additional travel distance.
Speaking after the announcement Sheryll said, "The final decision will be taken at a meeting of the Strategic Health Authority on 23 August but I am very optimistic that a positive result will be achieved. It is to the credit of the local PCT that they have a 100% approval rate thus far".
Sheryll has worked on this project since her election in May 2010 and praised all members of the Community who had worked so hard to deliver this project along with PCT staff who had shown utmost commitment to the delivery of the much needed facility.
Sheryll told the meeting, "I would like to pay tribute to all the doctors, community staff and practice nurses for delivering a superb quality of service in the town whilst working in the most difficult conditions. I would also like to thank CHAT ( Community Health around Torpoint) who convened a meeting to kick start this 5 year old project and invited me to attend. Since then the Strategic Health Authority Representatives have met me on a number of occasions and have always come prepared with an update on the project because they knew it was the first question I would ask."
Sheryll also told the meeting that she was very optimistic that the transport issues could be overcome with the Torpoint Bus Transport Group, Cllr Rose Southworth along with the Town Council and CHAT all engaged in working on a solution.
Other Councillors present were Cornwall Councillors Mike Pearn and Brian Hobbs and former town Mayor Cllr Eddie Andrews.
