Sheryll Murray MP has welcomed the new facility which will feature a new classroom block and replenishment-at-sea (RAS) systems built around a 25m steel mast and steel ship structures at the Seamanship Training Unit, HMS Raleigh, in Torpoint, Cornwall.
RAS is a method of transferring fuel, munitions, and general stores from one ship to another while afloat and takes place during day or night and in all weather conditions. The MOD has signed a £25 million contract with Rolls-Royce Power Engineering Plc based in Filton, Bristol to develop a new range of equipment and training facility.
Sheryll Murray MP said, “I think this is excellent news for South East Cornwall and I am delighted that the Secretary of State for Defence, Dr Liam Fox, has listened to my message of the importance of HMS Raleigh. This is a clear demonstration of confidence in the facilities at HMS Raleigh and shows the commitment there is to the base’s long term future.”
