Local MP Sheryll Murray was pleased to welcome the Secretary of State for Transport, the Rt Hon Patrick McLoughlin MP, to Fowey Harbour to stress upon him the economic importance of the port to her constituency and the wider area.
The Fowey Harbour Commissioner website stresses the importance of the harbour explaining: Fowey is a deep water harbour and an important exporting port on the South West peninsula, being the largest in tonnage terms. It is also in the top twenty ports for non-oil product exports in the United Kingdom. Fowey Harbour Commissioners provide the pilotage and towage services for the export of China Clay through Fowey to destinations all over the world. Fowey accommodates over 7000 visiting craft through the summer season and has up to 1500 resident craft.
Sheryll said, "I was also pleased to join the Secretary of State at a meeting with Fowey Harbour Commissioners and hear about their concerns. The River Fowey plays a very important role for Polruan and the maritime industry provides much needed employment for this part of my Constituency. Indeed, I have spent many past years working on our boats at C Toms and Son and it is always heartening to see vessels berthed on the slipway whenever I visit the town.
"I was also pleased to be joined by Steve Double who has been working hard to speak up for the people of Fowey as the Parliamentary Candidate for the St Austell and Newquay. It was good to discuss with him and the Secretary of State this important resource which borders both constituencies."
