It was important educational courses that local MP Sheryll Murray was pleased to hand out certificates for on Friday. In total each student had achieved 7 certificates covering various aspects of seamanship including safety, navigation, watch keeping, splicing, net mending, fish hygiene and engineering.
The courses are designed to give the students the qualifications they will need to get a job in fishing and aboard other vessels over three weeks. In all 14 students aged 18 to 40 qualified. Some were from Looe, some from Polperro and a couple slightly further from St Austell.
Following the event Sheryll said, “I am delighted that we are seeing new blood interested in entering the fishing industry. I believe this marks a new era in this wonderful industry that has provided for my family and continues to provide a really good living for so many other Looe families. I would like to end by saying thank you to Chris Dinham from Marine Co who donated a life jacket to the best student. It was also really good to see Clive Pulfrey, the coxswain of the Looe Lifeboat, present for the awards.”
