Police & Crime Commissioner Candidate Tony Hogg joined local South East Cornwall MP Sheryll Murray for a visit to find out the excellent work being carried out by Torpoint Boxing Club last week. Tony & Sheryll joined Chairman Mark White and the many younger members for their regular 'fun and fitness' session.
Tony Hogg said following his visit, "It was fantastic to meet with Torpoint Boxing Club with Sheryll Murray MP. This is a really worthwhile initiative which allows youngsters from all backgrounds the chance to train in a really good environment with people who clearly care about what they are doing. I would like to thank the many local businesses and others who have invested in this project to make it the success that it clearly is. This is exactly the kind of project that I want to encourage should I be elected Police and Crime Commissioner."
Sheryll Murray said, "I was also delighted to visit the Torpoint Boxing Club with Tony Hogg that I opened earlier this year on my birthday. I am so very pleased to see the club going from strength to strength with new equipment purchased. It was really good to meet the girls who attend, mainly for fitness but they do have a little spar as well. I would like to thank them for letting me try out their ?pink? boxing gloves."
One concern raised by Sheryll was that the youths were finding it difficult to take part in Competitions due to the charges for a medical. She said, "Whilst I can understand the medical profession charging for private medicals for adults at the level recommended by the BMA, it seems very unfair to charge children to take part in a sporting activity. As far as I can remember, and I stand to be corrected if rules have changed, a doctor can carry out a private medical free of charge if they wish and I will be writing to all local GPs to try to source reduced or free of charge medicals to support the Club. I would hope that local GPs will support Mark and his team who give their time freely to ensure Torpoint has this brilliant and growing facility for our local young people."
