Sheryll Murray MP was pleased to attend the first ever Pentillie Festival of Speed at Pentillie Castle on the banks of the Tamar near St Mellion. Following her visit Sheryll said, “I am so pleased the show was such a great success, I thoroughly enjoyed my day and would like to thank all the organisers for doing such a fantastic job in what was at time challenging conditions.”
The first Pentillie Festival of Speed racing was organised by Plymouth Motor Club and held at the over 300 year old home which has been recently refurbished. There was also a number of other attractions during the weekend including displays, a Land Rover Experience Driving area, shopping and scalextric.
One of the cars that Sheryll learnt about was the steam car Whistling Billy which got its name from the high pressure release of steam which reminded observers of a kettle. The 1905 car won the fastest ever mile that year at an average of 74mph and a year later travelled the fastest ever 5 miles on a track.
Sheryll said, “This really was a fascinating car and just shows what can be done using different power sources. As part of Parliament's green watchdog the Environmental Audit Committee, it was interesting to learn about the advances in steam technology over 100 years ago. I also was very interested in the driving technique which is very different to cars of today.”
