Sheryll Murray MP was pleased to be on hand to formally open the new facilities at Torpoint Sailing Club following a grant as part of the Olympic legacy.
The Legacy Trust explain their work as, “Legacy Trust UK is an independent charity that is leaving a lasting impact from London 2012 in communities by funding ideas and local talent to inspire creativity across the UK. We funded over 100 arts, sports and education projects across the UK as part of the cultural celebrations of London 2012. Now our funding is helping projects to grow and develop their legacy from the Games. From Stirling to Swansea and Belfast to Brighton, our support helps to build a lasting legacy from the Games in communities across the UK.”
Sheryll explained, “The funding which included new changing rooms with disabled access, dinghy storage and separate facilities for the diving and wind surfing sections came from an Inspired Facilities Grant.
“I was really pleased to meet so many old friends during my visit and have the opportunity to meet Commodore of the Club, Kevin Crane. It was also a pleasure to catch up with Club President Dave England after so many years although I was pleased that it was in the Club House rather than the Physics Classroom on this occasion.
“I was delighted that this facility represents part of the Olympic 2012 legacy for Torpoint and I am so pleased that my home town has benefited. It is also very heartening to think that local builder Steve Carr and his son undertook the construction work. For me, funding of this nature which helps everyone in the local area is of vital importance.”
