Following a meeting arranged between the Environment Agency, local Councillors and other community representatives, Sheryll Murray has welcomed the news that the statutory water quality results put East Looe beach amongst the best in the region for the majority of the time.
The Environment Agency gave a very clear description of its comprehensive programme to ensure continued improvement in bathing water quality and is working with the local community to ensure East Looe Beach will meet the new stringent standards required under the new EU Directive that comes in 2015. The results show that very wet weather in the area can influence water quality and this is a main focus being examined. Informing everyone of the water quality at the beach is the way in which we are moving.
After the meeting Sheryll said, "I am delighted the meeting has ensured that local people have been reassured about the cleanliness of the bathing water with the level of faecal coliforms recorded during May being as almost undetectable. The message is loud and clear to anyone looking to holiday in Looe, it is the most beautiful place to visit, please book your holiday. "
There is a requirement to provide signage under the new Directive and Sheryll has arranged to meet the Minister Richard Benyon MP next week to discuss fishing matters but will ensure the issue of the new Bathing Water Directive is also on the Agenda.
