On Saturday Sheryll Murray, MP for South East Cornwall, was pleased to officially open the display at Saltash Museum to celebrate the centenary of World War One. Titled 'It will be over by Christmas' - Saltash goes to war concentrates on how the First World War affected the people of the area, both at home and on the battlefield.
The display focuses on many issues and includes a life size trench. It explores what happened to the women and children left behind as well as those on the front line. It also brings much of the history to life by display some of the items and photographs of the time.
Following the opening Sheryll said, “The display was fascinating. Whilst I have been to exhibitions about the Great War before – it really did put a local perspective. I knew some of the families involved and know where the significant local sites such as Wearde where the 10th Battalion of the King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment were based.
“It was also interesting to see some of the history of the women’s suffragette movement. This was of course happening around the same time and being a women in political this particularly interests me.
“I would really like to thank everyone who has worked so hard on researching so much local history and for putting on such a fantastic display. I would encourage everyone to go and see this glimpse into our local history.”
