Local MP Sheryll Murray made time in her busy House of Commons duties to meet with Adrian McConnell, Gas Safety and Policy Manager and Chris Bielby, Chairman, from the Gas Safety Trust.
The meeting followed the sad news that two constituents had died from a grill defect. The Beko grill in question had been recalled but many still remain in circulation and are still dangerous.
Sheryll said, “I would urge anyone who has a Beko cooker to check their website and make sure your cooker is safe. Too often we don’t register our cooker or buy second hand meaning that we don’t get these recall notices. Please check to be on the safe site. Their website is http://www.beko.co.uk/CookerSafetyNotice”
At the beginning of the Summer season the Gas Safety Trust was also keen to ensure people behaved safely in particular the use of equipment designed for outdoors indoors. In particular they warned “40 people have been killed or injured by carbon monoxide whilst staying in a tent, caravan, holiday cottage or boat in Britain in the past two years. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a highly poisonous gas that is produced by the incomplete burning of gas, liquid gas, oil, coal and wood.”
Sheryll said, “One of the key messages is that you must not take outdoor cooking equipment such as a barbecue in a tent or other enclosed space. The danger is very real.
“I would also like to stress to everyone to get an alarm. Having a smoke alarm is very common now and I believe that the fitting of Carbon Monoxide alarms should be as common in areas of risk. It is £20 which could save your life.”
