Local MP Sheryll Murray met with surrounding residents and users of Portwrinkle harbour this weekend following representations from the Parish Council and local people.
During the outdoor meeting Sheryll listened to the concerns over the damage to the harbour which happened during the storms in February this year. The storms left a large hole in the wall and the council closed this part of the harbour to users.
At the meeting Sheryll explained how she has been assured that money is available and that she had raised this with Ministers in Parliament. She listened to the residents who explained that they had undertaken a lot of exploratory work and that the repairs to the listed structure would cost in the region of £60,000. Sheryll also heard from a gentleman who fished from the harbour and she also listened to a number of concerns with regards Cornwall Council spending money to facilitate the repair.
At the meeting Sheryll agreed to write a letter to support the Council in their grant application, write to fishing Minister George Eustice MP about possible money from the European Fisheries Fund and that she would approach the Council and Government Ministers for a joint meeting where any funding issues can be talked through and resolved.
Following the meeting Sheryll said, “I would like to thank all those who turned up top this meeting and it certainly shows how much people care about this harbour. I can assure everyone that they have my full backing and I have undertaken to do all I can to ensure this harbour is in working order again.”
