Around 100 pupils, teachers, Sheryll Murray MP and Torpoint Mayor & Mayoress Mike & Val Pearn gathered round Joanna Millan, a holocaust survivor, to hear her family’s story.
Joanna was born in 1942 and a year later, following her fathers execution, was taken with her mother to Theresienstadt concentration camp where she was held until liberation.
The event was organised by the Holocaust Educational Trust. The Trust aims to raise awareness and understanding of the Holocaust and its relevance today in schools and amongst the wider public. One of their educational projects is the Outreach programme, in which Holocaust survivors visit schools and colleges across the country to share their testimony with students
Following the event Sheryll said, “I would like to thank Joanna for sharing her story with us. It was a profoundly moving experience and I hope the pupils learnt from her story. Having visited the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp myself where Joanna’s father was killed, I know it is important that this lesson from history is never forgotten.”
