Local MP Sheryll Murray said she was “thrilled” by the statement by the Chancellor that fuel would not go up by the planned 3p per litre.
Sheryll wrote to the Chancellor before the budget on the 11th March giving her misgivings about planned fuel increases stating, “The car is not just a luxury, for many people in rural areas like South East Cornwall, it is a necessity. In rural areas such as ours many cannot just nip round the corner to the local shop, cannot expect our children to walk to school or jump on a bus to work.”
Sheryll spelled out her concerns to the Chancellor saying, “I am also very concerned over the risk of cost push inflation from the rising cost of fuel. This inflation will hit everyone. We have asked for pay freezes and see many on fixed incomes who will be much worse off if we do not act.”
Sheryll joined a Conservative Group campaigning for fuel concerns. As part of this group she met with the Chancellor and raised the issue of fuel. She also made a speech in the Chamber earlier this year outlining the impact of high fuel prices in areas like South East Cornwall.
Following the announcement by the Chancellor today Sheryll said, “This statement is a great victory for common sense. I am so pleased that the Chancellor has listened once again to Cornwall and the heavy impact this would have had on my constituents. As the Chancellor said in his statement fuel would now be 10p more per litre under Labour plans should it have been in Government. That’s around 45p a gallon. A ridiculous amount which certainly would not have fueled any growth in the economy.”
