On Friday Sheryll Murray MP was pleased to join volunteers to make enrichment parcels for the monkeys at Wild Futures as part of English Tourism Week where MPs were asked to go ‘back to the floor’ at a business or venue in the industry.
The Monkey Sanctuary, in Cornwall, is home to victims of the primate pet trade which Mrs Murray has been campaigning to end in Parliament. Whilst these animals are unable to be returned to the wild they do still need to have a natural life as possible. These enrichment parcels mean that the monkey has to hunt for and find food just as they would in the wild albeit in a different way.
After her work at the sanctuary Sheryll said, “It was great meeting and working with the volunteers who make such a difference to these monkeys’ lives. I would really like to thank them for all they do to support the sanctuary and look after these animals which can never be returned to the wild.”
English Tourism Week which is promoted by Visit England, is a week-long celebration of the tourism industry. Tourism is hugely important to Wild Futures, as the majority of its charitable income comes from its 30,000 visitors every year. Without donations from its visitors each year, the charity would not be able to continue in its vital work, protecting primates and habitats worldwide.
Sheryll added, “I always encourage people to visit the sanctuary which relies on revenue from visitors to be able to undertake work to support these primates. I always enjoy my visits and no two visits have ever been the same. I remember visiting the sanctuary as a child and have seen how it has changed over the years. So much has been learnt and these experts really do need our support.”
