Members of the Environmental, Food and Rural Affairs Committee visited the award winning Cornish Cheese company at Upton Cross just outside Liskeard to see for themselves what makes this company successful.
Cornish Blue Cheese has been produced on the Stansfield’s Farm on Bodmin Moor since 2001. The sweet mild creamy cheese of distinctive character has been internationally recognised by the many Awards it has won including; World Cheese Awards Champion Cheese in 2010 and Best Blue and English Cheese in 2007.
The cross party committee toured the cheese company as part of a tour of establishments across the South West. Local MP Sheryll Murray, who is one of the eleven MPs who sit on the committee, said afterwards, “This week I was delighted to welcome the Environment Food and Rural Affairs committee to a visit in South East Cornwall to the Cornish Cheese company in Upton Cross. I would like to thank Carol and Philip Stansfield for the fantastic hospitality they showed my fellow members of the Committee and myself throughout the visit. I am so proud that we have fantastic and growing businesses in South East Cornwall and also that Cornish Blue, the world award winning cheese is produced here.
“It was so good to be able to share this wonderful story with my fellow members of the Committee. Dairy farmers throughout South East Cornwall have suffered from declining milk prices but also the terrible Bovine TB disease. I am proud that we have so many dairy farmers who have shown true grit and determination to overcome these problems and not only expand but continue to employ more and more local people. The Cornish Cheese Company are joined by many others including Cornish Gouda and also Trewithen Dairy. They are fine examples of the success of so many businesses throughout South East Cornwall and I will continue to do my best to represent their interests in Westminster and ensure their success continues.”
