Local MP Sheryll Murray MP was pleased to welcome local businesses to the Cornwall School of Tourism and Hospitality based in St Mellion to discuss Apprenticeships. The meeting was held on Friday as part of the campaign to get businesses to sign up to 300 apprentices in 100 days.
Sheryll explained, “I was delighted to join local businesses at the Cornwall School of Tourism and Hospitality in St Mellion on Friday for the 300 in 100 campaign launch event. It is hoped during the 100 days of the campaign that 300 pledges from businesses to take on apprentices will be made. The campaign has the backing of the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Local Enterprise Partnership through its Employment Skills Board. Apprentices are young and learn through their course. It is hoped their skills will bring new business opportunities to Cornwall.”
The Cornwall Apprenticeships campaign describes their campaign as, “It has been recognised that Cornwall has additional unique needs due to its geographical isolation, transport links to a widely dispersed population and dependence upon the tourism sector. We hope that this website helps to address some of these needs.
“The Cornwall Apprenticeships campaign will be funded using the new Skills Support for the Workforce project which is an ESF Convergence supported programme. It is also funded by the National Apprenticeship Service and endorsed by the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Local Enterprise Partnership. The Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) was launched in May 2011. It is a private sector-led partnership between the private and public sectors and is driving the economic strategy for the area, determining local priorities and undertaking activities to drive growth and the creation of local jobs.
“The partners in the Cornwall Apprenticeships Campaign are making the investment to increase engagement and support for participation in education and Apprenticeships, to enhance their skills to become more successful in the labour market, advance career prospects and reduce the risk of unemployment. We will be providing locally defined, delivered and innovative approaches to meet the needs of new entrants to the workforce enabling them to realise their individual potential and contribute to the economic success of Cornish businesses.”
